The Truth About Making Dreadlocks

The hairstyle known as dreadlocks has been worn by many groups and cultures through the ages of history. Sections of matted hair, called ropes or locks, are usually formed intentionally, and the process of creating these ‘dreads’ can range from easy to difficult, depending upon the hair texture. Historically, this hairstyle usually represented some form of spirituality or cultural movement. Today people of all races, religions and creeds enjoy dreadlocks for a variety of reasons.

The Process of Making Dreadlocks

Many myths abound regarding the process of making dreadlocks. There are a number of things that must be kept in mind if a decision is made to start and continue the creation of this hairstyle. Results will vary, both in the look of the end result and the amount of time it takes to get there. It’s quite impossible to ‘make dreads’. One must, instead, allow them to create themselves. However, a little help here and there will speed the process along.

Using Techniques

Many hair texture types will begin to mat without the application of certain techniques Other hair textures, such as fine, straight or silky hair, will require some assistance. The most popular and most effective of these is called back combing. Much like teasing, a comb is used to push the hair back wards, toward the seal p, until a mat is created. Back combing should only be used at the beginning of the creation of dreadlocks and shouldn’t be repeated unless certain sections are not responding at all. Constant repetition of back combing could result in the loss of progress

Using Products

One of the biggest myths about creating dreadlocks surrounds the use of wax, gel or other products for holding locks in place as they form. More often than not, the use of these products results in unwanted situations. When using certain products on the market, even those created specifically for dreads, it’s more likely that your hair will attract bugs, rot, or produce an unwanted smell. There are natural substances that can be used instead that can be much more effective.

Natural Dreadlock Enhancements

Apple cider vinegar, baking soda and saltwater are natural substances that are effective for using on dreadlocks and will not damage hair. Mixing any of these substances with water and using twice a month on forming locks will enhance the quality and speed at which they lock completely. Additionally, wearing a wool team or sleeping with a wool sweater over a pillowcase can also speed up the process.

Maintenance

Another popular myth about dreadlocks surrounds the idea that people who have them never wash their hair. This is false, and as a matter of fact, dirty hair takes a much longer time to form into dreads. Clean hair locks up nicely, while dirty or oily hair is slippery and doesn’t easily turn into knots. It’s imperative to keep dreadlocks clean by washing the hair 2 to 3 times per week. Bugs, such as lice, can be prevented by using a solution containing rosemary or tea tree oil.

Commitment

Creating and maintaining dreadlocks involves serious commitment. Aside from the fact that the only way to get rid of them is usually to cut them off, one must also be free-spirited enough to allow the hair to form into dreads as it will. The end results among those who wear dreads can differ greatly and the amount of time it takes to form these locks can range from a few months to more than a year. If more time is spent allowing the hair to form, rather than implementing techniques to force results, the experience will be much more pleasurable.
